The pre-conference workshops at VSLive! provide the perfect opportunity
to drill deeply into the core of the today's hottest technologies.
Pre-Conference Workshops
Monday 12 May
ASP.NET and Web Services
Developing Better with Visual Basic .NET
ASP.NET and Web Services
Chris Kinsman and Keith Pleas, Guided Design
Web-based applications are rarely an island unto themselves. They need
to communicate with customers, vendors, suppliers, and others to be effective
in today’s fast-changing environment. In this full-day seminar,
we’ll focus on the new tools in the .NET Framework used to create
these applications: ASP.NET, ADO .NET and XML Web services. We will take
a fictional company and build an online e-commerce presence for it using
ASP.NET. The e-commerce site will use XML Web Services that we build to
send orders to suppliers and check the status on orders, and will also
look at UDDI as a way to publish and dynamically locate services that
you need to consume.
9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Developing Better with Visual Basic
.NET
Francesco Balena, Wintellect
Aimed at existing VB ‘classic’ developers, this workshop focuses
on the new VB.NET language and the differences from earlier Visual Basic
versions. It starts with the new object-oriented features, such as constructors,
inheritance, and method overriding. Then it proceeds with basic .NET data
types, structured exception handling, delegates, attributes, and an introduction
to multi-threaded applications. The seminar covers also .NET common data
structures (collections, dictionaries, queues, stacks), optimization techniques,
and best practices in porting old VB applications to VB.NET.
